For wealthy home buyers looking to rub elbows with royalty, a vast and historic country estate nestled in the heart of the English countryside next door to the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, has come to the market asking for offers over £7.5 million (US$10.3 million).
The 117-acre spread is near Tetbury in the Cotswolds—a coveted country destination well known for its upmarket rural enclaves, protected landscapes and lavish real estate offerings. Its Wednesday debut marks the first time it’s been on the market since the owner’s family bought it in 1949, according to listing agency Strutt & Parker.
Dubbed Elmestree House Estate, it’s sizable acreage borders that of Highgrove, Prince Charles’s Gloucestershire home, a property that’s famed for its extensive organic and sustainable gardens, which reportedly receive more than 30,000 visitors a year.
At the heart of Elmestree is its 11-bedroom manor house, a building that dates to 1844 and is reached via a private driveway that winds through the surrounding land.
The home is Grade II listed, a designation that earmarks it as historically important and ensures that renovations and alterations are made in line with its integrity and character.
The property is poised for renovation, according to the agency, and is filled with a wealth of period features, including imposing wooden double front doors, a sweeping staircase, mullioned windows, intricate cornicing and stone floors.
“Family-owned estates such as Elmestree rarely come to the market and this estate is particularly special,” said listing agent Matthew Sudlow, head of the Estates and Farm Agency at Strutt & Parker.
“To find a house that is as architecturally pure as Elmestree in this part of the world, with many original features,” he said, “is remarkable.”
Along with the manor house, the property is a home to a number of additional buildings, including a 17th century, four bedroom farmhouse; a self-contained three-bedroom annex; a two-bedroom cottage; and a traditional Cotswold-stone barn.
There’s also gardens, lawns, pasture and parkland, along with a small boating lake and ponds.
The property is “likely to attract attention from many different types of buyers, both those in the U.K. and overseas looking for a private residence thanks to its location in prime Cotswolds countryside, and proximity to the much sought after market town of Tetbury,” Mr. Sudlow added.
