When it’s time to take a break from the slopes, Kelly Wilkerson, her husband, Rick Wilkerson, and their guests ski straight to their Park City, Utah, home’s ski room.
“Everyone can leave their boots on and come into the room, which has a storage system for 25 pairs of skis, boot dryers and USB chargers in every locker, plus a couch, music, and a bathroom if you just want a brief break before heading back out,” says Mr. Wilkerson, 55, who was in the oil-and-gas pipeline business. “Every surface outside and inside has radiant heat to melt the snow, so you can safely walk from the ski room to the 8-foot-by-12-foot stainless-steel hot tub.”
Whether they’re in Park City; Stowe, Vermont; Aspen, Colorado; or Niseko, Japan, lavish ski-resort homes offer memorable vacations and weekends for extreme skiers and those who prefer to lounge by the fireplace.
The Wilkersons purchased their Park City ski house three years ago and gutted the interior to modernize it. The decks, which have infrared heaters overhead for winter warmth and surround the perimeter of the house, were extended an extra eight feet out to maximize the views of the lake and mountains. Built in 1993 for actor Robert Urich on Bald Eagle Mountain in Deer Valley Estate, the ski chalet has nearly 11,000 square feet, with six bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms.
“We kept the outer rock exterior and redesigned the rest to make a multigenerational retreat for our family,” says Mrs. Wilkerson, 45. “We opened the kitchen to the family room and dining room, and turned the apartment above one of the garages into a private guest suite.”
All the guest rooms in the house include a steam shower in the bathroom to combat dry mountain air. Every room in the mansion has a gas fireplace, and the deck includes a built-in fire pit, plus an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven and a grill large enough to feed 25 people.
“The house is located just off the ski lift mid-mountain, so you can go left up the mountain or right to go to the lower level and the base village at Snow Park,” Mrs. Wilkerson says. “But we spend time here year round because the fall is spectacular when the Aspen trees change color, and in the summer we like to go fly-fishing and hiking.”
The Wilkersons enlarged the windows and doors to create glass walls that frame mountain and lake vistas and provide easy access to the decks, which have glass railings for seamless views. The couple didn’t neglect their own space: Their marble bathroom includes a freestanding tub that overlooks the ski run and is adjacent to a sitting room with a fireplace. The house is on the market for $22 million.
